McCarthy Garranes

McCarthy Garranes

This property was farmed by the McCarthy family back to famine times and was inherited by an O Shea lady who ran a smoke house from the premises. Silver C. Oliver was the landlord in the mid 1800’s and it was a Newman property following the Cromwellian Confiscations. It was bought by the O Connor family in latter years. Tadg McCarthy joined the Donoughmore Volunteer Company as his cousin was involved there .He was promoted onto the Battalion command as adjutant and also as engineering training officer. Tadg had a large weapons bunker constructed in a remote part of the farm where some of the arms captured in the Mallow Military Barracks raid were later stored. When Tadg came home he slept in an outhouse with a back door and the family had three dogs to bark a warning should the military raid. It was raided number of times by the British Army. The house was in a long passage under Bweeng Mountain. See headstone CO-GLSJ-0011 Glantane in www.historicgraves.com
