Gortroe Mill

Gortroe Mill

Gortore mill was closed in 1847 and replaced by Bolster's mill in Curraghbower. There was a grist mill and tuck mill here and there was also a brewery on this site. There are local stories of an orchard here in the early 19th century. The Carey family tell of their great-great-great grandfather who remembers getting cider in Gortroe to the night of the big wind of 1839. (The night of the big wind of 1939 was a key question used in determining who warranted the new 1909 pensions)./Old Nicholas Tarrant from the adjacent forge told the stories of the brewery and their relationship with local landowners maintaining orchards and crab apples./ Jerry O'Leary says his grandmother remembers carts of apples being sent to Cork from this area -twould take 3 days round trip. "One day up, one day there, one day back."
