A walk at 6.15am in the morning through some of Lurgan's streets. We were surveying the old graveyard at Shankill, but as a Corkman living in Waterford I did not know one end of Lurgan from another. This early morning walk was a chance to get to know some parts of the town, especially after reading Lurgan's First Century (1610-1710) Collected Essays edited by Ronnie Hanna and David Weir. We also wanted to see the graveyard in its proper spatial context in particular its relationship with the former Lurgan Workhouse. When doing graveyards we usually focus on the gravestones only but as there is believed to be a Workhouse mass burial grave somewhere in Shankill it was important to walk between the two sites and check the old maps for how they were connected by road, lane or boreen.
This walk was done as part of an EU funded project https://incultum.eu/ in which we are exploring the use of video technology for communicating heritage tourism for local communities.
Don't mind the poor camera work/technique. It will improve with experience. The second half of the video (from 20 minutes in) is less off-horizontal so improvements are happening already and this is only the first of many (we reckon).
