Cnoc Breac Battle site known as Knockbrack monument was erected in July 2002 by Banteer and Lyre Community Council. On 26th July 1651 a wet stormy summer day an army of approximately 3000 led by Lord Broghill (Cromwellion) defeated an Irish army led by Lord Muskerry. After much slaughter and bloodshed almost all of the 3000 or so were killed or wounded horses and army alike. Broghill gave the orders for the brutal killings & was later known as the butcher of Knockbrack. McCarthy, Lord of Duhallow was also killed leading the troops of cavalry. The following day one of Lord Broghills officers known as "Butcher" Maxwell burnt the old church in Dromtarriffe.
