Denis Horgan was born in Fermoyle Banteer on May 18th 1871 and died in June 1922. He was a champion Irish athlete and weight thrower. During his career he won over 42 titles for the shot put including the Triple A Shot put championship thirteen times. This achievement is written in the Guinness Book of Records and is unlikely it will ever be beaten by another athlete. A winner of 28 Irish titles and one America Championship held in Celtic Park Queens New York. He completed in London in the summer of 1908 where he won a silver medal. Horgan was such a superior athlete that he seldom trained yet he beat all his fellow competitors in all weather conditions for over twenty years. A monument to the memory of Denis Horgan was erected near the field where he trained by the Lyre community.
