Sylvester Dempsey fought in 1798

Groups audience:

I asked Pat Murphy had he any stories about the Decade of Commemoration. He said he had a story about his great great grandfather - was it a problem that he fought in 1798?

‘My name is Pat Murphy of Cheekpoint. My great-great grandfather was Sylvester Dempsey, he fought in the Insurrection…1798 … in Wexford. Himself and another man were jailed and were going to be hanged but they got over the wall and they headed for Ballyhack, laid low for a couple of years and he married a Browne of Ballyhack who were blacksmiths, and he had three sons. We could never get to the bottom of it  - he wasn’t a leader or anything like that.’
