The current house in photo was built in the 1950’s by the Deady Family who still reside there. Before that there was a prefab dwelling which had been a British army camp. It was purchased by the Ring family. Michael Ring was an active member of Lombardstown Company of the Volunteers. They also bought one of the army round sheds which is still standing. The more famous family to live at this site were the Horgan family who gave the nearby cross roads its name “Horgans cross” and they were renting from the Lombard Family as far back as 1833. They were big into horse breeding and produced the dam of the famous racehorse Cottage Rake. This dam was regularly shod at Tarrants forge in Gortroe. Cottage Rake was trained by a young ambitious trainer by the name of Vincent O’Brien and won the Cheltenham Gold Cup three years in a row, 1949-1951, which has only been achieved once more and this established Vincent O’Brien as a top trainer and the rest is history. There was also a hedge school accommodated on the property and the Horgans also leased a forge during the mid 1800’s but this seems to have died out.
