Brittas House

Brittas House

Currently in possession of the Sheehan family (See headstone CO-GLSJ-0281 Glantane in www.historicgraves.com) and has been since Griffiths Valuation. Brittas townland was the property of the O Mullane family who lost it after the Cromwellian confiscations in c 1660. It was given to the Lombards of Lombardstown who gave it back to the O Mullanes in c 1680 in James Lombards will. They lost it again in c1740 through borrowings and the family went to Whitechurch where Daniel O Connells wife Catherine was born. Daniel O Connell bought back the townland for the O Mullanes in the 1800’s and in Griffiths Valuation records Morgan O Connell is the landlord. The property was in the possession of the Hallinan family in the early 1900’s and returned to the Sheehans again. Thomas Hallinan was a very active Volunteer during the War of Independance and Brittas House was used extensively for meetings and as a safe house. Eamon DeValera stayed in this house a number of times and  a local lady Hannah  Cronin, later known as Han McCarthy was always called in to do the cooking on such occasions when there were many mouths to be fed.
