Groups audience:
This house was a vital cog in the War of Independence as it was a safe house for volunteers on the run and for billeting some of the full time column volunteers. Ernie O Malley was billeted here the during the capture of Mallow Military Barracks. The fact that it was a good distance in a passage and beside Gortavoher wood made it an ideal hideout. Patrick Lyons was an active volunteer in the Lombardstown Company and was incarcerated in Spike Island prison where a poem he wrote then is stored in their archives. Patrick Lyons purchased Gortroe Inn about 1945.
