Gortroe Inn

Gortroe Inn

The Buckley family built this public house in the 1850s (there is a date stone on the gable wall). It served as a pub, provisions and fuel shop. O'Connells bought it from Buckleys and Pat Lyons had it after them (Pat was arrested during the War of Independence). Pat bought the pub after returning from the USA. Cashman's also had it at one stage and they sold it to Pat Mannix. Pat was married to Ann who was one of the O'Connells (previous owners). A building on the other side of the road used to serve as a shebeen (informal drinking house) but this building is now gone.
