Hugh Byrne was a private soldier in the Donegal Militia who settled in Ardmore following the 1798 Rebellion. He is believed to have settled in St. Declan's Hermitage in Dysert and may have worked on building some of the stone structure which currently defines St. Declan's Holy Well.
